This Grenache Shiraz Mataro and Carignan blend from old Riedl Vines vineyard epitomises the diversity of the Barossa Valley and its varying wine styles. A unique wine that still displays the rich, abundant fruit flavours and a mouth-filling palate that have made the Barossa region famous. Imagine an intensely sunny climate with soils that can produce fresh, lively wines when you open this bottle. The structure of the wine will allow for ageing, although the temptation to enjoy this wine in its youth will be a challenge.
Second generation sibling winemakers, Rolf Binder and Christa Deans are highly regarded for their skill and commitment to
producing premium quality Barossa Valley wines from their Estate Vineyards.
Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Carignan grapes were sourced from a collection of Binder Estate Barossa Valley vineyards, with each contributing
varying characteristics and adding a nice complexity to this wine. Some of these vineyards are known for adding depth and weight to a wine, while
others give the wine power and length. Our criteria is to select vineyards that are cropped at a level that is in harmony with the growth of the vines
and the strength of the soil.
The 2017 vintage wrapped-up four to six weeks later than the ‘new normal’ of the past decade, the growing season started after a long wet winter and
one of the wettest Septembers on record. 2017 promises to deliver an exciting array of wine styles, from “bright, aromatic wines”, through to “vibrant,
intense, well-structured” and “dense, concentrated” wines from the Barossa’s many diverse sites.
The grapes for this wine were picked over a period of 3-4 weeks as each of the four varietals comes to perfect ripeness at a different time. Individual
varietals were processed and matured in oak barrels seperately, using 60% older French hogsheads and 40% older American. After 14 months
maturation, the batches were selected and blended to create the final wine for bottling.
Grenache 48%, Shiraz 29%, Mataro 15%, Carignan 8% Alc. Vol 14.5%, Acidity 6.06, pH 3.42
Prominent notes of cherry and blackberry entice the nose with lifted fruit. On the palate, this fruity, light-to-medium bodied wine displays bright,
juicy flavours of red berries and plums. Soft tannins and a well balanced acidity lend to the overall enjoyment of an approachable red wine, with a
nice persistence of flavour that lingers well on the palate.
This is a wine to be enjoyed as a younger wine or at least until 2025.
