Hans Tschida voor de 5e keer “Sweet Winemaker of the Year“

“Liquid gold“ from Illmitz is once more at the top of the wine world

Hans Tschida named “Sweet Winemaker of the Year“ at the International Wine Challenge in London.

Vienna, 21 July, 2015

"Hans is in top form again this year with his excellent sweet wines," said Charles Metcalfe, co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge (IWC), about the winner as he brought Hans Tschida on stage to award him the International Sweet Winemaker of the Year.

The wines of the “sweet wine star“ of Illmitz have been awarded a total of 40 IWC gold medals, 36 silver medals and four bronze medals as well as 19 trophies since 2010. This year there were four gold, three silver, four bronze medals and three trophies for the best gold medal wine in their categories: the Austrian Icewine Trophy for the 2012 Grüner Veltliner Eiswein, the Sämling 88 Trophy for the 2008 Sämling Trockenbeerenauslese, and the Muscat Ottonel Trophy for the Muscat Ottonel straw wine from 2009.

Remarkable success. In 2015 no sweet wine winemaker even came close to getting as many medals as Hans Tschida, which is why he was honored for the fifth time with this world-renowned award. The celebration took place on Thursday, July 16, as part of the IWC Awards Dinner at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in London.

Hans Tschida has again brought not only Illmitz and the region, but all of Austria into the international limelight. The Tschida winery has regularly received IWC Awards for his brilliant special quality wines for 19 years, and now Hans Tschida is Sweet Winemaker of the Year for the fifth time since 2010. Besides him, this year Bruce Nicholson from the Inniskillin Winery in Canada and Klaus Kuhn of the Staatlicher Hofkeller Würzburg were nominated.

The IWC procedure. This time the IWC jury, consisting of international Masters of Wine, wine producers, wine merchants and specialty journalists, tasted over 14,000 wines in two tranches. Five chairmen presided over the jury: Tim Atkin MW, Oz Clarke, Sam Harrop MW, Peter McCombie MW and Charles Metcalfe. Each prospective medal wine had to pass two rounds of tasting in order to ultimately receive an award. Gold-awarded wines had to receive 95 to 100 points, silver-awarded wines 90 to 94 points, and 85 to 89 points were required for a bronze medal.

The winery. Sweet wine master Hans Tschida cultivates 30 hectares in Burgenland's Seewinkel region, and his main grape varieties are Welschiesling, Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Muscat Ottonel, Traminer and Pinot Blanc. His wines can be found on the wine lists of restaurants and merchants around the globe.

The IWC Gold Medal wines. The 2012 Grüner Veltliner Eiswein, 2012 Sämling TBA, 2008 Sämling TBA  and 2009 Muskat Ottonel Schilfwein.
